Denmark Arts Center presents “Painting the Light”, a show of contemporary landscape paintings of Maine and New Hampshire by a trio of artists – Janet Gill who paints with pastels, and Linda Gray and Jeanne Ouellette who both paint in oils. Their work is inspired by the vibrant and ever-changing light on the landscapes where they paint outdoors on location as well as back in their studios. Please join the artists for an opening reception from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Saturday, August 6th. “Painting the Light” will be on exhibit through September 24th, 2022. Light hors d’oeuvres, drinks and instrumental music with Vanessa Jones opens our gallery season.

Janet Gill- I love working with pastels. I am drawn to their rich and vibrant color and the energy that can be achieved by the actual pastel stroke or mark. When choosing subject matter and composition, color seems to be foremost in my mind. It is what excites me and draws me to a subject. My color choices often reflect what I am viewing but as the painting develops my color becomes more intuitive and somewhat pushed as I try to express the “feeling” of what I am painting and respond to the painting itself.
Linda Gray-Linda Gray lives in the Mount Washington Valley and paints oil on canvas landscapes, inspired by the dramatic elements of sky, land, and water found in the White Mountains and the coastal islands of Maine, be it the peace of early morning fog on the lake, or windswept clouds flying over granite peaks or white-capped seas.
Jeanne Ouellette-Jeanne Ouellette takes inspiration and guidance from the landscape as she paints in Western Maine in the foothills of the White Mountains.
