Denmark Arts Center presents JAZZ LECTURE SERIES with MIKE SAKASH & FRIENDS
Mike Sakash will present his popular Jazz History Workshop Series again on Wednesdays starting August 21st from 7-8:30 at the Denmark Arts Center. This Jazz series will be held on: 8/21, 8/28, and 9/4. Drop-in class fee $15.
The series will explore the rich jazz history of essential “standards” from the Great American Songbook from Irving Berlin to Carmichael and Mercer. Each workshop will follow one song from its inception through a wide variety of interpretations by jazz singers, instrumentalists, big bands, and jazz combos through the ages.
The series will be hosted by a cadre of musicians including; Mike Sakash, Justin Ramos, and Bruce Berquist! Discover the often surprising stories that accompany these favorites. Guided listening sessions, live performance/demonstrations, and discussions will be used to give you a deeper understanding of the tunes and the musicians who made them famous.
8/21 with Justin Ramos: “The Synthesizer in Jazz”, starting with its infancy and first playable models created by Bob Moog and the many evolved instruments that found its way into the Jazz forefront, how it reshaped Jazz and birth new genres of music!
8/28 with Bruce Berquist: “Variations of Jazz”, uncovers the origins, the culture of, creative composition of, and the soul and spirit of what is Jazz Music through the diverse variations. An interactive lecture on Variations of Jazz Music starting at the turn of the 20th century. The lecture will cover the progression of jazz, its evolution and variations, and the social events and influences it has been created in and from. Students will get to know the many and diverse musicians of this genre with a focus on vocal, piano, and bass. This class will have an expansive look at the influence and interaction that Jazz Music and Culture has had with many other popular genre of music.
9/4 with Mike Sakash: Lineage of the guitar in jazz, including Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny.
