The five available Greg Stump films from which to choose:
The Blizzard of Aahhh’s This is Greg Stump’s legendary rockumentary-style ski film that put him and, ultimately, extreme skiing on the map with the spotlight on some the sport’s hottest stars in some of the world’s most spectacular ski destinations. Featuring music by Andrew Poppy, Schonherz & Scott, Ted Musgrave, Nasty Rox Inc., Propaganda, Alpha Blondy and Act. Starring: Glen Plake, Scot Schmidt
License to Thrill In this musical ski film Greg Stump and cameraman Bruce Benedict go to incredible lengths to capture extreme skiers during their most harrowing, beautiful and even hilarious moments in places like Blackcomb, Jackson Hole and Squaw Valley. Featuring the music of legendary rock producer Trevor Horn, Nasty Rox Inc., Kissing the Pink, 808 State and Hoodlum Priest. Starring: Glen Plake, Mike Hattrup, Scot Schmidt
Groove: Requiem in the Key of Ski More than just pretty shots of ski races or the French Alps, legendary filmmaker Greg Stump’s movie features extreme skiing and snowboarding in amazing locations across the globe, from Valdez, Alaska, to Val d’Isère in France. Featuring music by 808 State, Seal, Hoodlum Priest, Bin Master, Sol.A. and Iggy Pop. Starring: Scot Schmidt, Dan Donnolly, Davey McCoy
P-Tex, Lies & Duct Tape Rich cinematography mixes with unforgettable music as Greg Stump captures extreme skiers and boarders in some of the deepest powder ever, meets up with a group of eccentric snow bums, and hangs out with Glen Plake’s massive Mohawk. Featuring music by Seal, 808 State, The Beastie Boys, Meshell Ndegeocello, Billy Idol, Dinosaur Jr. and Deee-Lite. Starring: Scot Schmidt, Dan Donnelly, Kevin Andrews
Maltese Flamingo Classic ski film by the one and only Greg Stump. A must for the avid skier. Early in the film career of Greg Stump, this is a delightful classic. The Stump movie freestyle movement begins and is so different that they need pink flamingo’s to get the point across… and even that doesn’t work. The secret life of sleeping bags? Cave men? Talking frogs? This movie has everything. A must view for all ski nuts! The beginning of progression to Blizzard Of Aahh’s, License To Thrill and Groove. Starring: Mike Hattrup, Glen Plake
If you are unfamiliar with Greg Stump, a quick google search notes, “Greg Stump spent two years on the professional freestyle circuit and was a skier in films made by Dick Barrymore, particularly Vagabond Skier shot in New Zealand in 1979. That was Barrymore’s last ski film and Greg Stump went on to appear in two ski films by Warren Miller.” Wikipedia.
But if you are familiar with extreme skiing films, you know Greg’s story doesn’t end there, no it’s just the beginning. Stump was the gasoline to Warren Miller films, igniting people’s passion and exploding films with extreme freestyle skiing, setting a new standard. Greg Stump went on to produce 25 skiing films featuring snowboarders, killer soundtracks, free skiers Mike Hattrup and US SKI Hall of Famers Glen Plake and Scot Schmidt, grabbing the attention of a younger, hip audience. Greg become an 80s & 90s ski filmmaker pop icon.
Greg secured his ski film legend status with a sweet blend of his narrative combined with the music of legendary rock producer Trevor Horn. Greg’s films exquisitely married movement with music for an exciting viewing experience. Bands like Nasty Rox Inc, Kissing the Pink, Propaganda, Alpha Blondy, The Beastie Boys, Billy Idol and the unforgettable velvet-voiced singer-songwriter Seal underscored Greg’s skiing films.
Oh yeah, after your film extravaganza, make sure you tune in to Denmark Arts Center’s Facebook page or SkiHOT Facebook page at 5pm EST on Monday March 8 for the Drawing O’ the Ski-Stump filmFEST Prizes – or go to www.denmarkarts.org for a list of winners.
